July reviews from St Kilda

Wonder by R. J.Palacio - reviewed by Lola and Olivia

This book is about a boy called August who has a deformed face, with eyes on his cheeks and inverted ears. Some people get frightened when they see him. His sister Via on the other hand is very pretty. Until now August has never been to school because his mum home schooled him. Before he starts the fifth form at a real school, he goes on a tour with new classmates Jack Will, Julian and Charlotte. Julian pokes fun at August calling him “Darth Sidious”. On his first day at lunch August sits by himself as all of the other kids gossip about him at their tables. Then a nice, hippy girl Summer sits with him and they soon become good friends.

Later in the book August thinks that Jack Will has been pressured into being friends with him and they go through a bit of a hard time until the misunderstanding is resolved. Jack Will ends up punching the bully Julian in the face and he loses some teeth. He doesn’t mind though, because they were baby ones and he is a rebel.

In overview, the book combines the perspectives of many different characters and their emotions are described really well.

In this book you feel sad for August, but it is also a gripping and exciting read.

NERDS : Attack of the bullies by Michael Buckley – reviewed by Jack

Five kids work in an undercover spy agency. They all have special, secret, super powers.
  •         Matilda Choi aka Weezer - flies and blasts enemies with her inhaler
  •         Duncan Dewey aka Glue stick - can stick to any surface
  •         Julio Escala aka Flinch - is hyper fast, strong and just plain hyper
  •        Ruby Peet aka Puffer Fish - is allergic to a lot of things, including danger and dishonesty
  •        Jackson Jones aka Brace Face - can make any gadget out of his braces.
The team’s enemy is Miss Information, an evil ex librarian who recruits mean kids for her own group, the bullies. The bullies have powers of their own such as stink, snot and strength. The bullies meet in an underground lair which has twenty-five levels. Each level is the size of St Kilda Library!

This book was really good because I like reading things that don’t involve too much violence.

Rated: 4.75 out of 5 reallys
