December reviews from St Kilda

It’s about 3 children - Violet, Sunny and Klaus Baudelaire. Their parents have died and left behind an enormous fortune, and their closest relatives keep trying to get it. In this adventure they are looking for the secret V.F.D. Isadora and Duncan Quagmire know the secret but they have been captured so the Baudelaire orphans go looking for it. Violet, Sunny, and Klaus are raised by the entire village, the Village of Fowl Devotees. They find out the secret.

The newspaper gets his name wrong and calls him Count Omar. Disguising himself as Detective Dupin he 'discovers' Count Olaf (a fake) who gets murdered. The village has over 90,000 rules – rule-breakers are burnt at the stake. Detective Dupin frames the orphans for murdering the fake Count Olaf. He says to them “one of you will make a miraculous escape and you will live with me until I get your fortune” but they escape.

Dear Scarlett by Fleur Hitchcock - reviewed by Rosa

It’s about a girl called Scarlett and her dad was a criminal, or people thought he was, but he was actually a spy.

Rated:  4.5 reallys

The society of thirteen by Gareth P. Jones - reviewed by Will

This is about Tom and Esther who try to steal from a rich guy called Lord Ringmore. Lord Ringmore proves the magic show is not real and then someone gives him a purple book with strange symbols. Then he employs Tom and Esther and they need to work for him as repayment for stealing from him. At one point Tom meets a magpie who keeps coming back again and again, who later magically talks.

Rated:  4.5 reallys - "This book is exciting but then it gets boring, and then it’s exciting again – this keeps being repeated."

In this episode it is the 4th guardian the orphans have had, as the guardian always gets killed. In the blurb of every book there is a funny bit - "The pages of this book, I'm sorry to inform you, contain such unpleasantries as a giant pincher machine, a bad casserole, a man with a cloud of smoke where his head should be, a hypnotist, a terrible accident resulting in injury, and coupons."

Rated:  4.9 reallys – "I’m knocking a point off for extreme sadness and misfortune."

To be a cat by Matt Haig - reviewed by Olivia

Warning – this is a very confusing book. I really loved it even though it was very confusing. It’s about a boy who turns into a cat, who was a cat and who was a person?
