February reviews

Reviews from the St Kilda club

The longest whale song by Jacqueline Wilson - reviewed by Lilly

There’s this girl and her mum’s going to have a baby with her stepdad. When the mother gets to hospital and has the baby she goes unconscious and goes into a coma. While the girl is out of school (because she’s worried about her mum) her best friend goes off with another girl.

When the baby comes home her stepdad’s really angry. They keep checking on the mum every day and she keeps being off school. A really sweet boy in her class gives her a newspaper article about how people can wake up from comas.

At school the girl is studying whales. She puts a whale song on an ipod and puts it into her mums ears. And you’ll have to read the book to see if this works.

Kill the possum by James Moloney - reviewed by Julia

About this boy and his girlfriend who has an evil stepdad. They have tried to divorce him but he won’t accept it and he is torturing the family.

The boy tries to get evidence so the police will believe him. The stepdad won’t give them any money.

Finally he gets video evidence that he is bad and it is shown in court.

Halo by Alexandra Adornetto - another review by Julia

The first in the series. It’s about an angel who comes down to earth with her older siblings to stop bad things happening in this town. She isn’t meant to communicate with humans but she falls in love. An evil spirit comes in disguise to school and her friend is in danger.

"I couldn't stop reading!"

The Lottie project by Jacqueline Wilson - another review by Lilly

It’s about a girl Charlotte, who is called Charlie, who has quite a young mum. A lot of people think she is her older sister.

Lottie has to do a "Victorian" project – she wants to do a diary of a servant. The servant is called Lottie (called Charlotte by her mistress like Charlie). In the diary she has to look after 3 children - a baby, a 4 and a 6 year old. The baby gets stolen by a woman whose children have died. She doesn’t look after the baby properly. The police find the baby and give him back to his parents.

There is a boy called Jamie who does a good project too and his & Charlie’s projects are chosen as the best.

With a small group for the first meeting of the year, time also allowed films to be discussed:

TRON - reviewed by Louis

It’s about a dad who gets lost in a video game. A boy (18) and another person who knows the dad and has a key both go to the old place and go to the world of TRON to find his dad.

4.7 reallys

Tangled - reviewed by Finnley (Finn)

It’s basically a Rapunzel story. The princess is taken away by an evil wicked woman. The princess is locked up in a stone tower and her only escape is by her powerful long hair. Finally she escapes.

Travelling musicians of Bremen - reviewed by Jules

This film is about a donkey and a farmer who is not nice to him. The donkey just walks until he sees a dog. The dog asks him “why are you sad” and the donkey says "why can’t I be a musician?" and then he keeps walking until he sees a cat and he repeats the question and the answer is the same. Then he gets to a house and there are pirates inside the house. He comes screaming out of the house. Finally they get to eat and sleep, the cat scratches the donkey and pushes him out of the house.

Morning glory - reviewed by Julia

It’s about a girl who works on a TV show that is not popular. She gets fired because they can’t pay her. She gets another job also where there are not many viewers. She thinks she can turn it around, but again she’s in fear of losing the job, but then she gets really into it and is successful. She is offered a job on the biggest morning show but she decides to stay where she is.

“Entertaining but not much of a plot!”

2 new reviews, just in...

The adventures of Super Diaper Baby by George Beard & Harold Hutchins - reviewed by Louis, aged 7

I liked this book because it was funny and weird! It’s about a boy who and falls out of the window and falls in some power drink and became SUPER DIAPER BABY! The main character is Super Diaper Baby, I think he’s weird because he dresses in a really silly way! In the book some words were spelt wrong but it’s on purpose. I think its good for the other boys!!

Playing Beatie Bow by Ruth Park - reviewed by Julia

Playing Beattie Bow is a gripping book about a girl in her teens, Abigail who gets accidentally taken into the world of Beatie Bow. Beatie being a mysterious little girl who has a special gift – a sort of time travelling.  Abigail is overwhelmed and confused when she comes into Beatie’s long gone world; the Sydney she knows seems miles away. But she has a prophecy to fulfil in Beatie’s world before she can leave… This exiting book will enchant you in the story of Abigail’s life as she deals with her problems back at home and the struggle of growing up. The book is quite confusing at times as it has lots of ‘olden day talk’ in it, but I think this adds to the charm of the book. I’d definitely recommend this book to girls and boys aged from 10-13 years old, and especially if they’re interested in the history of Sydney.

Both Louis and Julia will go into the draw for a $50 gift voucher for emailing these reviews to the library!
