May reviews from St Kilda


Matilda by Roald Dahl - reviewed by Mikhalia

This is about a little girl whose mum and dad are so fat they can’t fit through the door. All they want to do is watch TV. She taught herself to read and borrows about 10 books a day from the library. Her bedroom shelves, under her bed and all her drawers are full of books. On the first day of school she meets Miss Honey, her teacher, and makes friends with the other students.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J. K. Rowling - reviewed by Netta

Harry stays at the Dursleys  and he’s walking home with Dudley, his fat cousin. They meet dementors where he conjures a patronus and almost gets expelled from Hogwarts. 

"This was my least favourite Harry Potter book. The problem didn’t seem as interesting as in the others."

Take your last breath : bk. 1, Ruby Redfort - reviewed by Ruth

It's about this girl called Ruby Redfort who gets a butler called Hitch, who is actually a secret agent for Spectrum. Ruby is a good code cracker and Spectrum wants her to help them in their work. To get into Spectrum they have all these random codes which they change all the time. Ruby solves codes and mysteries. Her parents are attacked by pirates and tossed into the sea. They survive by holding onto a suitcase and float towards an island. 

"Really interesting. The reader has to do code breaking along the way. You go to the Ruby Redfort website and find the code."

Little Fur by Isobelle Carmody - reviewed by Olivia

It's about an elf troll called Little Fur. She can see what the trees are thinking. She has a friend, a horse called Brownie. She has to go and find an owl in a tree. To get there she can’t walk on asphalt and metal, she can only walk on natural things, like grass, leaves and dirt. She lives in a grove of trees called ‘the old ones’ and she stops humans destroying the forest.

Ivy + Bean take care of the babysitter by Annie Barrows - reviewed by Rosa & Tess

Ivy is fancy, Bean isn’t. Bean has a mean sister called Nancy. When Bean gets yelled at she is called Bernice. When she is baby-sat by her sister Nancy she doesn’t like it. She goes to her room and throws a stick with an SOS sign to Ivy to be saved. They go to the attic, but when they can’t open the door they call for Nancy who gets angry with them for being up there.

Brisingr : bk. 3, Inheritance cycle by Christopher Paolini - reviewed by Jack & Jackson

It’s about a gold dragon called Glaedr – the series is about 3 dragons, all very rare. The blue dragon is called Saphira, and the red dragon is Thorn.

Eragon and Saphira have just finished war against Galbatorix, who is an evil dude, and his new rider of dragons, Murtagh, also an evil dude. Eragon is a good dude, and Oromis is a good dude.You have to be chosen by a dragon to ride one. 

They have just finished a war and they have killed 4 monsters. Now they are back at Varden’s camp and Galbatorix. has declared war on them once again.

"This is even better than the other 2 because we know more!"

Jack says it’s "awesome and exciting"  

Rated:  5 reallys – "it’s the third favourite book I’ve ever read. My first favourite is Heroes of Olympus and my second favourite is The Brotherband trilogy."

Jackson also gave it 5 reallys – "but advice to anyone planning to read this – Eragon (the first book in the series) is off to a slow start, but be patient and read past page 100!"

Museum of thieves : bk 1, The Keepers series by Lian Tanner - reviewed by Lola

This is about a girl called Goldie Roth who lives in the City of Jewel and she’s not allowed to be independent or bold, so she runs away to this mysterious Museum of Dance where she meets a boy called Toadspit. When walking around the museum they see the bristlehound who stalks around so no one can steal anything. The rooms of the museum move around and change place at night. Goldie and Toadspit are good at stealing so they find their way around. There is a man trying to take over the museum and the plans he is making threaten their families so they want to try and stop him.
