October reviews from St Kilda

Winter's light by M. J. Hearle - reviewed by Georgia

This is about a bad girl called Winter. Her boyfriend is a bit different – he can teleport. He goes to a land called The Deadlands. After he teleports he feels really hungry and can only get over it by kissing someone who is a ‘key’. Winter is a ‘key’ – and she has ‘the sight’. This puts her in danger.

Five little pigs by Agatha Christie - reviewed by Saskia

Agatha Christie has written 80 books about 2 detectives – this one is with Hercule Poirot, about a murder that happened 20 years ago. Amys was murdered – his wife Coraline Crale was convicted of murder but her daughter wants Poirot to investigate whether her mum really was guilty because her mum left a letter saying she wasn’t.

Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy - reviewed by Liam

This is not a spoiler – it happens in the first sentence – Gordon Edgely dies! At the funeral a girl called Stephanie (his niece) notices there is a strange man wearing a scarf, gloves and coat so you can’t see any of his skin.

There are no flaws in the book. I really liked it!

Rated:  5 reallys - All the books up to 5th book are really good – I have got the 6th book and am halfway through it.

Turtle in paradise by Jennifer L. Holm - reviewed by Lily W.

The story is set in 1935. It's about a girl called Turtle, and her mother starts to work for a rich lady who doesn't like children. Having nowhere to go, she ends up in Key West, where her mother grew up, staying with her aunt Minnie and some rather dumb boy cousins who she has never met. She becomes friends with the Diaper Gang, a gang that her cousins and their friends are in, that change diapers. While she's there family secrets unfold, including her grandmother who is alive when she was told she wasn't by her mama. She also finds hidden treasure with the Diaper Gang, and has her share of the money she got for it stolen by her mother's new boyfriend.

This was a really great read, and I would have liked to copy the blurb and make that my review. I really like how Jennifer Holm described what Turtle did and didn't like. I knew from the start that: she doesn't like Shirley Temple, and she loves her mama among other things. I think I might have found a new favourite author and can't wait to read some of her other books.

The unlikely voyage of Jack de Crow by A. J. Mackinnon - reviewed by Dom

About a guy who sailed from North Wales to the Black Sea in a dinghy called Mirror. There is a different adventure in each chapter. Jack goes through 12 countries, across major shipping channels and through rivers and encounters pirates. My grandad recommended it – it’s really exciting.
